Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard – Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée
The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée from Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard is one of the estate’s most ambitious and profound cuvées. Made exclusively from Chardonnay, this Premier Cru stands out for its richness, power and remarkable persistence, while retaining the freshness and minerality characteristic of the great terroirs of Chassagne-Montrachet.
The nose reveals a complex bouquet of ripe pear, white peach, white flowers and citrus fruits, complemented by nuances of beeswax, almond, hazelnut and delicate spicy notes. With age, more toasted and subtly smoky nuances may emerge.
On the palate, the wine is full, dense and powerful, with generous texture supported by beautiful freshness. The fruit is ripe and precise, complemented by a mineral framework and pleasant saline tension. The oak ageing brings depth and texture while allowing the purity of the Chardonnay to shine through. The finish is long, dry and remarkably persistent.
A distinguished Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru, combining richness, structure and deep minerality. The 2018, 2021 and 2022 vintages each offer a different expression of the terroir, with particularly interesting ageing potential. The 2022 vintage is the final vintage produced before the La Romanée vines were uprooted for several years.
Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard
Founded in 1985 by Laurence Gagnard and Richard Fontaine-Gagnard, Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard is now one of the well-regarded estates of Chassagne-Montrachet. The estate farms approximately 12 hectares of vineyards, mainly in Chassagne-Montrachet, along with several plots in Volnay and Pommard.
The estate’s philosophy is based on careful, terroir-focused viticulture. Soil management, sustainable farming practices and a constant pursuit of high-quality grapes help preserve the purity and identity of each individual plot.
Winemaking remains traditional, with fermentation carried out using indigenous yeasts and ageing in oak barrels for 12 to 18 months. The proportion of new oak varies according to the appellation level, with approximately 30–40% for the Premiers Crus and Grands Crus.
La Romanée is one of the estate’s emblematic white Premiers Crus. The 2018 vintage has notably been described as particularly concentrated and powerful, while the 2022 vintage stands out for its rich fruit, structure and exceptionally long finish.
