Domaine de la Romanée-Conti – Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2019
The Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2019 from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti marks the estate’s entry into one of Burgundy’s most prestigious appellations for great white wines. The first vintage of this cuvée, it comes from plots located on the upper slopes of the Corton hill, cultivated by the estate under lease. The 2019 vintage produces a remarkably rich Chardonnay, both full and powerful, yet carried by beautiful mineral freshness.
The nose reveals great complexity, with aromas of ripe yellow fruit, citrus and white flowers, complemented by notes of lime blossom, fresh walnut, hazelnut and delicate nuances of butter and toasted bread. The ageing brings additional depth without masking the purity of the fruit or the expression of the terroir.
On the palate, the wine is full, dense and concentrated, with generous, almost creamy texture perfectly balanced by remarkable mineral freshness. The rich and precise palate is gradually extended by beautiful saline tension, leading into a long, elegant and persistent finish.
An exceptional Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, combining power, richness, freshness and minerality with great precision. As the first vintage of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti under this appellation, it has remarkable ageing potential and will gain even greater complexity and depth over the years.
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, often referred to as DRC, is one of the most prestigious and sought-after wine estates in Burgundy. Based in Vosne-Romanée, the estate boasts an exceptional wine heritage of legendary Grands Crus, including Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Grands-Échezeaux, Échezeaux and Montrachet.
In 2018, the estate began cultivating approximately 2.9 hectares of Corton-Charlemagne belonging to Domaine Bonneau du Martray under lease. The plots are located in particular within the Le Charlemagne and En Charlemagne climats, two particularly renowned sectors of the appellation. The 2019 vintage marked the very first harvest and vinification of Corton-Charlemagne by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
The 2019 vintage benefited from particularly favourable conditions. The Corton-Charlemagne harvest began on 22 September and was completed on 25 September. The grapes, described by the estate as golden, very ripe and perfectly healthy, were carefully harvested. A large proportion of the must was aged in new oak barrels, complemented by a smaller portion aged in a large oak vat.
This new cuvée perfectly illustrates the estate’s philosophy: a constant pursuit of purity, precision and terroir expression. The result is a great white Burgundy that is rich, deep and powerful, yet remarkably fresh, with its minerality bringing balance and length.
