Álvaro Palacios – Gratallops 2023
The Gratallops 2023 by Álvaro Palacios is a great red wine from Priorat, made exclusively from grapes grown in the municipality of Gratallops. A true “Vi de Vila”, it precisely expresses the identity of this emblematic terroir, characterised by llicorella soils, the distinctive slate found in Priorat. The 2023 vintage stands out for its elegance, energy and remarkable freshness.
The nose reveals an expressive and refined bouquet of ripe black fruit, plum, blackberry and black cherry, complemented by notes of violet, Mediterranean herbs and delicate spices. Nuances of graphite, liquorice, incense and wet stone gradually emerge, highlighting the mineral character of the terroir.
On the palate, the wine is full, juicy and perfectly balanced. The generous texture is supported by beautiful freshness and ripe, fine and precise tannins. The black fruit is complemented by spicy and mineral nuances, while a subtle saline touch brings tension and depth. The long and persistent finish leaves a fresh, elegant and deeply mineral impression.
A great Priorat that combines the natural power of Garnacha with the freshness and structure of Cariñena. Already highly appealing today after good aeration, the Gratallops 2023 also offers excellent ageing potential and will gradually develop greater complexity and finesse over the years.
Álvaro Palacios
Álvaro Palacios is one of the leading figures in the revival of Priorat. After arriving in Gratallops in 1989, he devoted himself to revealing the exceptional potential of this region and its historic terroirs. His work is based on an in-depth knowledge of individual plots, demanding viticulture and a constant pursuit of purity and precision.
The estate works its vineyards on the poor, schist-rich llicorella soils that are so characteristic of Priorat. The vines are cultivated with particular attention to balance and the natural expression of the terroir. Álvaro Palacios’ philosophy focuses on wines in which Garnacha can express its full depth while retaining mineral freshness and great energy.
For the Gratallops 2023, the grapes come from several plots in Gratallops, with vines ranging from approximately 19 to 75 years old. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts, partly with whole clusters, and then aged for 14 months in oval foudres and large French oak vessels. This approach preserves the purity of the fruit while bringing additional depth and complexity.
