The site: a dominant position on the hill overlooking the village of Aloxe-Corton. The Maison Joseph Drouhin estate faces due east.
History & tradition: Corton-Charlemagne is the only vineyard in Burgundy to bear the names of two emperors: “Corton” comes from Curtis d’Othon, Gallo-Roman, i.e. the estate of Othon, emperor of the Rhine, which gave Courthon and then Corton; Charlemagne (Carolus Magnus), the famous emperor, is said to have owned the vineyard in his time.
Soil: brown limestone and pebbles. Charlemagne’s soil spreads and climbs with ochre grains and blond pebbles.
