The Mâcon-Lugny Regional Appellation: an exceptional terroir in southern Burgundy
Situated in the heart of southern Burgundy, the terroir of the Mâcon-Lugny regional appellation extends over the “Les Crays” area in Saint-Gengoux-de-Scissé. At an altitude of 300 meters and just 30 km north of Pouilly-Fuissé and 15 km east of Cluny, its westerly exposure helps to keep cool in a region that is warmer than the rest of Burgundy.
History and tradition
The first traces of viticulture in the Mâcon-Lugny region date back to the early 10th century. In 916, historical documents mention the donation by the Abbey of Cluny of an estate in Saint-Gengoux-de-Scissé. The name “Crays” derives from the Celtic word “cracos”, meaning “stony hill”. This medieval name characterizes land made up of stony scree and alluvial cones, forming an ideal substrate for vines.
This type of soil is particularly well-suited to the production of top-quality wines, often classified as Premier Cru. Similar terroirs can be found in other regions of Burgundy, such as Les Crais and Les Cras in Marsannay, Les Crâs in Vougeot, Les Crays in Monthelie, Les Criots in Meursault, Les Cras in Beaune, and the prestigious Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet in Chassagne-Montrachet.
