At Domaine de Riaux, the Jeannots have been handed down from father to son, but the magnificent flinty clay terroir remains, and the demand for quality is passed down from generation to generation.
Pouilly Fumé is made from Sauvignon Blanc, a grape variety whose bunches of grapes are made up of small ovoid berries, packed close together and resembling chickadee eggs. When ripe, these berries are covered with a grey, smoky-coloured bloom… which explains why the winegrowers of Pouilly refer to the Sauvignon grape or wines made from it as “Blanc Fumé”.
The term “smoky” also refers to the unrivalled and instantly recognisable aromas and bouquet (or “fumet”) (the famous “flinty” taste that comes from rubbing two flints together) that the exceptional terroirs of the Pouilly/Loire vineyards give it. This is what GEORGES BLANCHARD (a poet from the Nivernais dialect) expressed so well in his own words, which have a strong local flavour, in a poem entitled “L’ vin d’ Pouilly”.
