Jean-François de Pontet, governor of the Médoc in the early 18th century, gave his name to this 5th Cru Classé. Since 1975, it has been owned by the Tesseron family, with Alfred Tesseron at the helm. After six years’ work, Pontet-Canet was the first of the Médoc Crus Classés to convert to organic and biodynamic viticulture (certified since the 2010 vintage). Under the watchful eye of technical director Jean-Michel Comme, Pontet-Canet’s 81 hectares are cultivated like a garden, without chemical weedkillers, using horses for ploughing.
A direct neighbor of Mouton Rothschild, Pontet-Canet sits on a superb croup of quaternary Garonne gravel, with grape varieties favoring Cabernet Sauvignon (65%). Moderate use of new oak makes Pontet-Canet a great Pauillac, classic in style, but full-bodied and built to last. Crème de cassis, prune, fig, cedar and sometimes cocoa… the evolution of its aromatic palette is infinite. A velvety texture helps to give the taster this singular emotion.
