The Château Mouton-Rothschild grand vin is made from the best vines planted on the “Plateau de Mouton”, part of the 90-hectare estate. Their root systems are able to anchor themselves in particularly deep gravel soils. In Pauillac, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend. Depending on the vintage, up to 80% is Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
The grapes are harvested by hand.
The wine is aged for around twenty months in the purest Médoc tradition, entirely in new barrels, with topping up and fining with egg white to stabilize the wine by precipitating any remaining solid particles to the bottom of the barrel.
Most vintages offer opulence, richness and depth, enhanced by a remarkable aromatic complexity ranging from blackcurrant and roasted coffee to mint and fine leather.
A special feature of Château Mouton-Rothschild is the annual collaboration with an artist to design an original label for the wine. Labels have been designed by Chagall, Braque, Picasso, Dali, Francis Bacon and even Prince Charles of England!
