Fortified house, known as Saint-Maubert, commanding an important seigneury in the Middle Ages and protecting access to Bordeaux, the site of Latour was the subject of a battle during the Hundred Years War. However, the milestone in its history was the unification of the estate by Arnauld de Mullet at the end of the 16th century. It enabled the cru to possess very early on a homogeneous vineyard (65 ha today), established on a beautiful hilltop of large clear gravel, the heart of which – the terroir known as de l’Enclos (47 ha) – gives rise to the great wine. Another asset, stability: the property remained in the hands of the descendants of the Ségur, an illustrious family from the Médoc vineyards, until 1962. After passing “under the British flag” (Pearson group), the cru was acquired in 1993 by the industrialist François Pinault, who has invested heavily in the vines (uprooting and replanting) and in the cellar (new underground cellar, renovation of the vat room).
