Created in 1985, Le Clos is essentially made from young vines. It is composed of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the percentage of which varies according to the quality of the vintage. It is a “pleasure wine” with a medium ageing potential (around 10 years).
Vineyard work on the Clos plots is identical to that carried out on the plots producing the first wine: pruning, grassing the soil, manual leaf thinning, green harvesting, manual harvesting.
In the cellar, the same gestures punctuate the successive stages in the elaboration of this wine, whose identity is now well established and recognized. Unlike its big brother, which is aged with 50% new wood, the second wine is aged exclusively in one-wine barrels for 10 to 12 months.
Originally, Le Clos was reserved exclusively for private customers. The wine trade has been interested since the 2000 vintage. It is offered to professionals en primeur at the same time as Château La Gaffelière.
In some foreign markets, Clos Gaffelière is sold under the Dame Gaffelière label.
