Château MARTET, a venerable charterhouse built in the 13th century, a hospitable house of the Order of the Templars for the Pilgrims of Santiago de Compostela, was acquired in 1991 by the current owners who immediately endeavored to return the vineyard and the property to their letters of nobility.
Our high-quality terroir was dedicated to viticulture since the Roman era and became widespread from the 11th century.
Located 25 km from Saint-Emilion, the vineyard of nearly 25 hectares in one piece is positioned on the plateau and the hillsides overlooking the Dordogne at 100 meters above sea level, near the small town (former bastide of the 13th th) of Sainte-Foy-la-Grande.
The soil over 18 hectares is of the clay-limestone type (equivalent to the dominant one in the Saint-Emilionnais area) and over 7 hectares corresponding to the highest part, it is of the gravelly clay type.
After two first years of observation, it was decided to start a heavy program of restructuring the vineyard which began in 1993 and ended in 2006.
The goal was on the one hand: uprooting of grape varieties poorly adapted to the soil, that is to say Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet-Franc which only very rarely experience optimal maturity and cause undesirable tastes of green peppers…. And on the other hand, uprooting of the large vines with too low planting density which is very often a source of diluted wines…
With the 2004 vintage, our last hectare of Cabernet will have produced for the last time, and all the large vines will have been uprooted (with the exception of one and a half hectares intended for the vinification of Martet Clairet) to be replaced by low vines at a density of 5,500 vines per hectare. It goes without saying that we saved the plots of low vines of old Merlots dating from the years 1960 to 1965, in order to maintain a perfect balance between young vines and old vines.
